I purchased this item for a Canon Vixia. The hood is well made and attaches to the view screen with large velcro tabs. These fasten at the back of the screen so are easy to work. The inside of the hood is a matte material so there is no reflected light. This is an absolute necessity for shooting in bright sunlight. With the display on its brightest setting it was very difficult to pinpoint what exactly was being displayed. Bright light washed out the details so any action was hard to center. The hood provides enough dark shadow to see exactly what you are recording.

I couldn’t see my monitor screen at all in the bright sun until I added this unit to my camera bag…and it’s worth every penny. I just wish it was made a little better.

Fit & Finish:
The outside of the Hood is finished in synthetic leather. The inside is lined with felt/cloth material. It is constructed with stiff plastic or hard material sandwiched by the leather and felt. This helps the Hood retain its shape. As such, it does not collapse.
The backside of the Hood features 2 flaps that fold over the back of the LCD and are secured together w/ velcro. The flaps overlap and provide a large surface area for the velcro.
Form & Function:
For the HF-S100, the Hood only shields the actual LCD, leaving the navigation and function buttons, left of the screen, exposed. (Obviously.) However, this means the play/pause/record/stop buttons below the LCD are shielded by the Hood.
As designed, the Hood fits perfectly on the LCD flip-out. The two flaps on the back do secure the Hood, but because of the stiffness, they do not close completely flat. (Its as if the LCD flip-out is just a bit too thick, making the 2 Hood flaps bow out, not flat. (I’ll be posting pics of this…)
The Hood functions perfectly. It provides enough shade to allow the LCD screen shine brightly in direct sunlight. The only catch now is you can’t just flip the LCD closed. So while you have it on, you’ll have to keep your LCD open even when you not filming. This leaves the LCD flip-out open in a vulnerable position. This can be annoying especially if you’re just out-&-about filming the family taking random shots/moments – flipping the LCD shut for protection is a natural habit, but w/ the Hood, you’re forced to leave it open or constantly putting it on or taking it off and then figuring out a way to carry it when not in use. (It’s not a problem for me since I also have a bracket on the same side with a external mic – so I’ve got a handle on the LCD side anyway which provides some protection and I just strap the hood to the bracket handle if I want to close the LCD…) Another side effect is the added benefit of “some” privacy for your LCD. You have to view your screen head-on to see it completely.
Summary:
I really like this product for the HF-S100. The first time I took the camera out in bright sunlight, I had a tough time seeing the LCD screen. Now, no problems w/ the Hood. You have to make some room in your bag for it because it doesn’t collapse, but it is constructed well and fits good. It’s worth it and I highly recommend it if you have a fully accessorized camera. (It also give the camera a more pro-look, IMHO, when combined with other accessories…)
