Don’t buy it. If you must, please buy mine. It picks up a huge motor noise from the camera and the sound is not improved in the least. Shame on Sony. I love my Sony hdr-hc3 camcorder, but this is one of their low points.

First off, I own a HDR-HC3 sony camcorder. My initial problem was that after recording footage, I would easily hear the sound of the internal batter in the camera rolling. So after doing much research on whether to buy this mic attachment or the Stereo Gun Zoom Microphone by sony too, I decided to buy this one.
PROBLEMS WITH THIS MIC:
Even with the wind protector, it records even more fuzz and noise than the camcorder does without it. I am still baffled because the microphone is suppose to eliminate the various surrounding noises. Instead, it picks up the surrounding noise clearly ruining the dialogue spoken from your subject.
ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT THE MIC:
It records the sound of the person much clearer and this is quite noticeable.
I am returning this microphone and hoping the shotgun zoom microphone will do the trick.

I have not had the opportunity to use it much, but I am a little bit dissappointed about the sound quality, I was expecting clearer sound, the performance seems to be too similar to the embedded microphones to be worth the money

I have nothing but good things to say about this product. My son is in a band, and I video tape everything. This little microphone has made all the difference in the world in the sound quality of their live show videos. I tried all the settings on my camera to see if anything would help with the horrible distorted sound of the video, but nothing worked. I actually made this purchase based on another review that I saw on here, from someone who also wanted it for the same pupose. I’m so happy I did. It was so disappointing to see a great live show, and then get home to have the boys watch it back, and it sounded horrible. I’ve taped several concerts of theirs with the mic, and it’s 100% better. In my opinion, it’s fast and easy to attach. It’s small enough to fit in the camera case, or even just my purse! lol and the fuzzy cover is also a great help in blocking out the chattering fans around. I bought it soley for the purpose of taping the concerts, so I don’t know how or what else I would need it for, but I am so happy with it, and highly recommend it for taping loud rock concert-like events

MIc does a nice job…. good improvement over the onboard mic. Handles sound spikes better.
